I almost abhor the thought of even working for a company that isn't involved in the nearby community. I often give to food drives, blood drives, charitable organizations, and have been on more heart foundation and breast cnser walks than I can count. A great anecdote of my personal life goes this way: My first Thanksgiving year away from home I had agonized on what I'd do since I had no family to celebrate it with and had not been able to make it home due to my work schedule.
The day before Thanksgiving, the answer presented itself. I was reading a books, and a sentence that stood out to me was man who said "I've found that when I needed something the most, I always give whatever I have, and it comes back to me". So on Thanksgiving day, I began calling around out of the local telephone book to all of the area food pantries and churches, and wouldn't you know it, I found one that was open and understaffed. That day, I served turkey and dressing, and cranberry sauce to people who were less fortunate than myself. I felt more gratitude for all of my blessings than I think I ever had in my life. I even remember, when the last pot was cleaned, and the floor was mopped, and we workers had eaten our fill, I still didn't want to go home. I just wanted to help help help. I still have friendships from then, and that was eight years ago.
I know now, that when I strive to improve my community and surroundings, usually the first thing to be improved, is me.
